Position Statement by the California Unity Bar
The Unity Bar is steadfast in its mission to promote confidence in the judicial system and expand access to justice for underserved communities. At its core, the Unity Bar is dedicated to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the judiciary and fostering a system that reflects the demographics and lived experiences of California’s diverse communities.
Grounded in an unwavering belief in equity, justice, and the inherent dignity of every human being, the Unity Bar stands firm against policies and actions that threaten DEI principles. We strongly denounce and reject the executive orders issued under Donald Trump’s administration that undermine these essential values. These actions are not mere policy shifts; they are attacks on the very fabric of our society—our diversity, shared humanity, and commitment to justice for all.
The erosion of transgender rights, the assault on birthright citizenship, and the dismantling of DEI initiatives represent a betrayal of the constitutional promise of equality and justice. Transgender rights are human rights, and any effort to erase or marginalize transgender individuals is an affront to our collective humanity. Every person deserves to live free from discrimination and to access the same opportunities as anyone else. Policies that dehumanize transgender individuals attack the principles of human rights, freedom, and justice.
The attack on birthright citizenship strikes at the core of American identity. Our nation’s foundation rests on the principle that anyone born in the United States is part of the American dream. This promise, enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment of our Constitution, affirms our history, identity, and future. To deny this right is to reject the ideals that make our country strong and inclusive.
DEI initiatives are not just bureaucratic measures; they are essential to foster workplaces, schools, and communities where everyone can thrive. The dismantling of these programs seeks to perpetuate inequity and exclusion in the face of progress. Such actions are a direct threat to the vision of a fair and just society.
The Unity Bar refuses to remain silent as these fundamental rights and principles are attacked. We are committed to advocacy, education, and action to defend the rights of transgender individuals, protect birthright citizenship, and champion the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our mission is clear: to foster a society where justice prevails, and every person, regardless of their identity, is valued and included.
Together, we will resist. Together, we will rise. We are many, but we are one. United, we will create a future that honors the humanity in us all.
